Dr. Ajmal Shams is the Vice- President of the Afghanistan Social Democratic Party, serving in this position since 2005.

With a strong background in civil engineering and development, Dr. Shams entry into politics was mainly triggered by his late father Shamsul Huda Shams who led the party till his death in October 2005. Dr. Ajmal Shams has served in both professional and senior level position in the private sector, international organizations and the Afghan government. He served as the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing since December 2016 till June 2018. Dr. Shams is also a regular author in various international publications including Foreign Policy, the Diplomat, The Arab News, The Gulf News and many other media outlets. He mainly writes on development, politics, environment and economics. Most of his publications are dedicated to addressing developmental, political and socio-economic issues and promoting human rights in Afghanistan. He holds a Master degree in Civil Engineering from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, USA and a PhD degree in Water Resources Engineering from the National University of Malaysia.
